With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather (aka “Baba”), James C. M. Haskin. Even though he had been diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer in February of 2020, he ended up heroically battling an antibiotic-resistant infection with a 46-day hospital stay and 15 days at home, until he finally passed into Heaven on May 26, 2021 at the age of 73.

Jim was born on October 17, 1947 in Jamestown, NY to Ralph and Ruth Haskin. He spent his early years working on farms and in the construction industry. Jim graduated from Bemus Point High School in 1966, and enlisting in the U.S. Navy shortly thereafter to serve his country. He was known as “Husky” growing up.

Jim moved to Colorado in 1970, where he met the love of his life, Mary Veit, in Ft. Collins, CO. He asked Mary to dance, and it was LOVE at 1st site. The couple were married at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in 1972 and started a family in 1973. They resided in Ft. Collins for 25 years, before moving to Loveland, CO.

Happy times were spent in their RV on many road trips, riding his Goldwing motorcycle with Mary, and vacationing to all-inclusive resorts and he loved taking cruises. He enjoyed playing cards, including Texas holdem and cribbage. He was an avid jokester with a fantastic sense of humor. He was a handyman who could fix anything. He built many sheds and covered patios from the ground-up for his family. He enjoyed taking drives and spending time with his granddaughters, especially watching his granddaughters play softball. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus in Ft. Collins at the church.

Jim was a route salesman for Pepsi and Budweiser before retiring with the Teamsters union at Roadway at age 65. He was known as “JC” at work. After counting the days to retirement, he and his beloved wife took a well-planned road trip in their RV to Alaska to visit their daughter. They continued to spend many winters in their RV in Apache Junction, AZ.

Jim is survived by his wife of almost 49 years, his son Jimmy Haskin, daughter-in-law of 25 years, Jenna, and granddaughters Joya (18) and Jorja (15) of Johnstown, CO, his daughter Michelle Haskin and granddaughter, Lena (3) of Loveland, CO, his sisters Cindy Carlson, , Peggy Weston, Sally Thunberg, Renee Locey and brother Charles Haskin of Bemus Point, NY, sister Marcy Steward, of Jamestown, NY and sister Claudia Chapman of Mentor on the Lake, OH, and, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was proceeded in death by both parents, nephews Jason Haskin and Leonard Weston, and brother-in-law Doug Weston.

Jim loved talking to strangers and was a model to all of us for his kind nature, joking spirit, and easy-going personality. He will be missed by so many.

A celebration of his life will be held Thursday, June 3rd, 2021 in the reception room at Viegut Funeral Home in Loveland, CO, from 11-2pm.

Mary, Jimmy, Michelle and families,
I am so sorry for your loss. I can only imagine what you are going through right now.
Thank you for allowing me to come and visit him (and you), I will cherish the memory always.
We could all write books on the good times we had with Jim. I prefer to wait and share them in person.

Love Always,

Jimmy Nethercott

I am blessed to have been able to know Jim. My fondest memory must be of the night I got to get to know him better when I joined the Haskin family for drinks and MUCH laughter after a dinner show in Jamaica. How lucky I am to have shared in his life.
