Obituary

James Vernon Porter of Loveland, Colorado went to be with the Lord on April 5th 2021. Jim was born in Fort Dodge, Iowa where he attended Community College. Jim met and married Marcia Porter, also from Iowa, and they celebrated 53 years of marriage. Not long after their daughters were born they moved to Fort Collins, Colorado where they spent several years raising their family.

Jim is survived by his two daughters; Michelle and Melissa, five grandchildren; Cortney, Brianna, Brandon, Kat and Hunter, his great-grandson; Cohen and his only brother; Robert.

Jim was enlisted in the Army and honorably discharged after 6 years of service.

Jim was a determined, stubborn, and strong-willed man, but loved his family and friends with all his heart. He adored his daughters, grandchildren, and his great-grandson tremendously and made sure they all knew it. Jim was known for his thriftiness; he would drive an extra 30 miles just to save 30 cents. He loved gambling, going on relaxing drives up to Horsetooth Reservoir with his wife to see the wildlife, and spending quality time with his family and friends.

Jim was a member of King of Glory Lutheran Church and attended service every weekend.

Viewing will be held at Viegut Funeral Home on Wednesday, April 7, 2021 from 4pm-6pm. Cremation will follow viewing. Memorial services will be held at King of Glory Lutheran Church on Friday, April 9, 2021 at 10:30am with a reception at the Viegut Funeral Home Reception Center from 12pm-1:30pm following services.

I’m so sorry, Courtney, to learn of Jim’s death. I go back with Jim about as far as there is going. We were born six months apart, and were raised through our childhood next-door to one another. We interacted much like brothers sharing food, toys, and everything else there was to share. Although our lives took different directions as we grew older, we continued to keep in touch with one another. Our periodic telephone conversations were mostly about our families. Jim was incredibly loving toward all of you. My heart is heavy for your loss. If I am able to find old pictures of jim and I in our cowboy suits, I’ll try to send them to you. I would attempt to be there at Jim’s funeral if not for my own health problems. I will be thinking of you and wishing all of you peace and love.
